Ok, I know you are already sick about hearing about animals but I just had to share Cowboy’s story since we adopted him a year ago this weekend! We adopted Molly, our American Bulldog, in October of 2008 and I we decided she needed something to help burn off all the energy and entertain her. She was a wild woman and loved nothing more to tear up things when mom and dad would not give her enough attention. So I we decided to get Molly a little brother.
I started looking at the shelter and found several potential brothers but when the Director of the shelter approached me about a shy red nose puppy I could not resist. He was an 8-month-old bait dog who was rescued in the middle of a practice round for a dogfight. A sheriff overheard the commotion while driving through a neighborhood and jumped into the middle of it. Not thinking that the puppy would survive he rushed him to the vet where he would spend the next 2 months having both legs rebuilt and his neck and teeth put back together. He quickly became known as Cowboy as he walked bow legged due to the surgeries like a cowboy after a long ride on their horse.
Bringing home Cowboy was such a joy to me us and Molly but it quickly became very stressful when others disagreed with the type of dog Cowboy was. I was ashamed to even mention that I had adopted a…. pit bull. A lot of people are afraid of pits and do not like them, including the media. But after a lot of research, I am proud to say I own a pit bull and I think Cowboy has changed a few minds himself too.
Since last year I have joined a rescue group located in Alabama called “Bama Bully” where we help other bully breeds, especially pit bulls, get out of shelters and into loving homes. Cowboy has opened my eyes and hopefully because of him other pits will have a better chance at life and love. If you are ever looking for a new dog I highly recommend them. They are wonderful companions.
When he first went to the vet...
Today as a happy puppy....
I did not know he was a pit bull! He looks very sweet.
